Playing tug is a fun relationship builder and can be used as a high-energy, high-value reward in training. In fact, many dog sport trainers use tug toys to reward their dogs. Tug play is a great way to teach self-control and a solid “drop it” cue – all while having fun with your dog! And some dogs even like to play tug with each other.
Even destructive dogs can take advantage of tug toys. Play with the tug together and then put it out of reach when the game is done, so that the dog learns that you are the source of tugging fun and doesn’t practice settling down to chew it.
